On the Banks of Plum Creek

And sometimes even in the creek.

Today we drove to Brookings, South Dakota via Walnut Grove, Minnesota. Iowa was mostly flat farmland with corn as far as the eye could see. We did a quick tour of the museum in Walnut Grove but it sort of paled in comparison to the museum at Rocky Ridge. Then, we drove out to see the site where the dugout had been on the banks of Plum Creek.

It was so lovely there and we all waded in the creek. If it hadn't been so hot, Dan and I might have sat and let the girls play in the creek longer. We took pictures on the little bridge over the creek. Somewhere there is a picture of me on that same bridge 29 years ago when my grandparents took me. I've promised the girls that I'll see if I can find it.

We had a short drive to Brookings, but there were dark clouds and warnings of pssible tornadoes and severe thunder storms so we were happy to arrive safe and sound. The girls were delighted to discover this hotel has a water slide and they've already done one stint there.

It will be interesting to see what De Smet offers tomorrow. Alex is excited as her favorite "little house" book is set there and a friend told her there is lots to see.

Here is the map of our route from Omaha to Brookings, via Walnut Grove.
