Starting Home

We are starting on our way home. After going 2846 miles, and with Branson being the farthest away from home we will be on this trip, today we started our journey home. After one quick stop at the car wash to see if I could find the spare tire cover and we were back on Highway 65 heading North (playing Willies 'On the Road Again') towards Omaha. We may be headed home but our adventure is far from over as we have planned stops in Omaha NE, Des Smet SD and Rapid City (via the Badlands) SD. If all goes well, we may even make it to Glacier National Park by the time we get home on the 15th. See the map below for our driving trip today. Then go even farther to hear about our evening in Omaha.

Omaha is lovely and we arrived in time to have dinner and go exploring. It was warm, not too humid, and there was a nice breeze off the river. We headed over to Heartland of America Park which is this big gorgeous green space with a huge fountain, and several other water features. We saw swans, geese, ducks and some sort of fish or something with fins that kept poking out of the water. We walked all around the lake portion and over to a view of the river and railroad.

Then, it was such a nice evening, that we continued along and walked down the path to the pedestrian bridge over the Missouri. It is a really impressive structure. It curves and gets all lit up at night. So, we walked to the half way point (we have now crossed the Missouri River 6 times already on this trip, 2 because we got on the wrong freeway in KC) and “walked to Iowa” as Laura says. It was impressive how fast the river was moving and they’ve created just a fabulous river front area. We all really enjoyed our 2 hour walk although everyone had sore feet when we returned to the hotel.
