Future Sewanee Tiger?

Monday morning we headed out early for our first official college visit with Alex.  Last spring Alex started asking lots of questions about colleges so we got her a college guide and she’s been reading through state by state and keeping a list of schools that appeal to her.  High on her list is Sewanee:  University of the South.  So, we decided we’d go check it out while we’re in Tennessee.   Tulane’s campus is beautiful and it put that school on her radar, but Sewanee is stunning!
It sits high on the Cumberland Plateau and in places has breathtaking views (Shot to the left is from campus looking over the valley).   All of Tennessee that we’ve seen is green and rolling hills and beautiful trees.  The school is gorgeously maintained.
The buildings are modeled after Oxford – Laura said it is like going to school in a castle.  We got there a little bit early and wandered around and then went in for our official tour.  They had prospective students tour separately from the parents/siblings.  We had an excellent tour guide and learned a lot about the school.  Dan and I both want to go there!  Laura is wishing they had a strong dance program and Alex is in love.  Strong academics, small class sizes, fun and silly too, lots of traditions and lots of outdoor activities.  They have equipment free for check out for hiking, climbing, kayaking, etc.  The tennis team is excellent and they have 15 gorgeous courts.  The pool is the nicest pool I’ve ever seen.   After the tour, we visited with some admissions folks and Alex got to chat with the gal who covers the NW.  Then, we drove and explored on our own a bit more.  Sewanee felt like Alex.  I can’t quite explain it but there wasn’t anything we didn’t like and it seems a great fit for her.   That said, it was only our first tour so we will see as we go along.  Thankful that we have lots of time to make these choices.

After Sewanee we continued our drive towards the Smoky Mountains.  We stopped in Chattanooga and saw Ruby Falls  (to the left the ladies in front of the falls)– an underground waterfall.  It was neat, but very commercial and crowded.  We all found that we prefer the charm of something like Lost River.

We continued on our way and arrived in Sevierville that evening and settled into our condo ready to go exploring the next day!
